The staff and volunteers of a Dutch animal shelter work hard to provide care for homeless or neglected pets. They treat the cats, dogs and rodents arriving to the shelter and find them suitable homes. Director Saskia Gubbels observes the everyday life of the shelter - both its joys and sorrows - and documents the interactions of people and animals with a gentle but keen eye.

As a setting, the animal shelter brings forth the contradicting relationship between humans and pets: on the one hand, pets receive intense love and care, but on the other hand, the suffering caused to them by human cruelty and neglect is often enormous. In the busy life of the big animal shelter, both life and death are constantly present.

But who actually takes care of whom? In addition to the lives of the pets, the film also reveals the often painful stories of the people volunteering at the shelter, too.
