Anita Chitaya is unyielding. In Malawi climate change is leading to severe drought, but with innovative farming and cooking methods Chitaya manages to keep thirst and hunger in check in her village. She advises others on how to grow food in dead soil and gets men to fight for gender equality in her community.

Now, to save her home from extreme weather, she faces her greatest challenge: persuading Americans that climate change is real. Together with her mentor Esther Lupafya, Chitaya travels through the US in pursuit of this goal. While visiting both rural and urban areas, they come upon a dangerous illusion of immunity: many seem to think that climate change does not concern Americans. Chitaya and Lupafya also witness the country’s division, encountering issues of race, class and gender.
