Kamchatka Bears. Life Begins

 

If you would need to use one word for this film, it could be balance. And if a child would watch this film, the answer to the question “what does the bear say” could be varied: bear growls, glucks, puffs, rattles and naturally, also roars at times.

 

The film follows two mother bears with their cubs in the South Kamchatka Federal Sanctuary in Eurasia. Tesla with two and Masha with four cubs dine at the Kurilskoye Lake, which is the biggest sockeye salmon spawning area in Eurasia and also a Unesco World Heritage site. When the views amaze and the spectrum of species fascinate, the mind bums into a peculiar contradiction: this wonderland might be suitable for a hiking trip, but then again the area we see in this movie is in balance right because of its untouchedness.

 

The manifesto of the film doesn't really lean on linguistic or outspokenly graphic material, even though both the prologue and the epilogue contain information about bears and the state of the area. The manifesto is found from a deeper level and is carried out discreetly, even cunningly. It's in the enormous lanscapes, in the romping bear cubs, in the sockeye salmons swimming in glassy water. They themselves awake the desire for permanence. When the mind is turned around and the diversity of the area is surveiled as natural resources, a fear for loosing something this exquisite awakes. When watching the bears, you wish that their future generations would also be products of their own environment.
